The Polder pump station Haveneiland lies on the connecting dam between two islands of IJburg. The water pumps are located in the orange concrete core. The tapered angle represents the flow direction of the water and integrates the angled inlet grille in a natural way with the building volume. The semi-transparent metal screen that conceals garbage containers, grid rakes, inlet and ventilator grills and crane tracks from view, places a mysterious haze over the building. At night the lights behind this screen illuminate the building and the pump station will function as a lantern on the dike and as a beacon on the water.
