Grave Churches

Some empty church buildings are part of the cultural heritage of the Netherlands. In order to preserve the valuable empty churches, S2 architects proposes to use them as indoor cemeteries. In this way the maintenance of the building is paid from the burial rights and the dignity of the church building is thus preserved.

On top of the existing church floor, walls of stacked graves will be dispersed freely. Depending on the floor plan and the section of the church, multiple configurations and levels are possible. Some space can be used to say one’s goodbyes to the deceased.
