If the underlying motive in primary males' strategies for "being teachers" is to preserve the masculine while they apprentice in a feminine context, then critique of that goal is certainly productive. In this chapter, I have described primary teaching from the perspectives of men who teach there. Synthesized from their collective experiences, five themes frame the discussion. This chapter is an outgrowth of a study shared by nine men who, at the time of the study, were teaching in kindergarten through third grade. I began the study with observations, interviews, and written journal exchanges. When several of the members of this group expressed a desire to meet the other participating teachers, we became a study group that met periodically to discuss our teaching and lives.
